Diabetic Shoes

What Are Diabetic Shoes?

Diabetic shoes are specially designed shoes intended to reduce the risk of skin breakdown in diabetics with pre-existing foot disease.  Diabetic shoe design incorporates:

  • Extra Depth – accommodates for swelling, and custom orthotics
  • Protective Toe Box – protects toes
  • Shank – adds extra support to arch area of shoe
  • Heel Counter – provides maximum foot support by cradling the heel to reduce over-pronation and prevent heel slippage

Why Wear Diabetic Shoes?

People with diabetic neuropathy have nerve damage in their feet may have a false sense of security as to how much at risk their feet actually are.    A foot ulcer under the foot can develop in a couple of hours.

The primary goal of diabetic shoes and therapeutic footwear is to prevent foot complications, which can include strain, foot ulcers, calluses, or even amputations for patients with diabetes and poor circulation.
